Subaru Outback (left) vs. Subaru Forester (right)

So, you have already compared different brands, which is why you have decided on Subaru, but now you have to choose between two of our best SUVs: the Subaru Forester and the Subaru Outback. Which one do you take?

What's the Same?

These are two Subaru SUVs, so let's acknowledge the similarities first. Both the Forester and the Outback come with a 2.5-liter Flat 4 Cylinder engine with all-wheel drive and your choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Bluetooth and HD Radio come standard in both vehicles, as well as cloth upholstery and all-season tires.

The Forester and the Outback also share most of the same standard safety features, including stability control, traction control and an anti-theft system. The warranties are the same as well; both vehicles have a basic warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles and a drivetrain warranty of 5 years/60,000 miles.

What's Different?

Other than the exterior styles, these two vehicles have subtle differences mostly in power and cost. Starting with power, the Subaru Outback packs more horsepower than the Forester and more torque. The Outback also has a bigger gas tank and is an overall larger vehicle. And according to, the Outback has a slightly higher average consumer rating in matters of safety, comfort, and technology.

However, the Forester costs less both on the day you buy it and over the first five-year cost of ownership. The depreciation and the true cost to own, according to, is lower than the Outback.

So with this taken into account, it comes down to which suits you the best. For more information on either of these vehicles, feel free to contact us on our website or come in to Wilsonville Subaru and test drive them both to experience the difference for yourself.
